New York Bridges in Fog (January 13, 2005, 9:30 am)

Taken with the teeny tiny Canon PowerShot SD300 I'd just gotten for Christmas. I'd wanted a tiny camera, because I kept finding myself in situations where I wished I had a camera, but I knew I'd never carry around anything bigger than an iPod. Sure enough, I had the camera in my coat pocket as we drove across the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan, and I was able to get some decent photos, even through the windows of a fast-moving car. Note lack of skyline, Brooklyn's or Manhattan's. Note lack of virtually all landmarks, for that matter.

Click to enlarge any of these.

The approach to the Brooklyn Bridge from the Brooklyn side. The pedestrian walkway is on the left. There is a rather large bridge right in front of us, though you'd never know it.

On the bridge. No sign of a bridge, a river, or a city anywhere.

You can barely see the tower here.

Roebling's controversial "ether suspension" system works marvelously. The suspension cables are bolted to cumulus clouds (not pictured), and the bridge has been solid as a rock since 1883.

What's this? A tower? When did they install that?

Gothic arches appear.

And become distinct.

And approach.

And loom.

The off ramp from the bridge. The tower is there somewhere in the middle of the photo.

Same again.

There it is.

Still on the FDR Drive, going uptown, approaching the Manhattan Bridge.

The Manhattan Bridge...

...used to go to Brooklyn. In the words of the rap song, "Where Brooklyn At?"

"Under the bridge downtown — I could not get enough." I love this photo. I've always felt the Manhattan Bridge is underrated, just because it happens to be right next to one of the most beautiful bridges in creation. Here's proof.
